The Ash That Wrote A Book

In 1815 Mount Tambora erupted in Indonesia — the most powerful eruption in
recorded history. The sulphur it threw into the stratosphere froze into a
veil of droplets that dimmed the sun across the whole planet.

The next year, 1816, went down as the Year Without a Summer. Snow fell in
June. Harvests failed across Europe and North America. Famine followed.

That same rain-soaked summer, a group of writers were stuck indoors beside
Lake Geneva and dared each other to write a ghost story. One of them was
eighteen years old. Her name was Mary Shelley, and what she started that
week became Frankenstein.
