Your Brain Won't Let You Tickle Yourself

Drag a feather along your own arm and nothing happens. Hand it to somebody else, let them trace the exact same path, and you flinch.

Before your arm even moves, your brain sends a copy of that motor command ahead to the cerebellum, which predicts the touch the movement is about to produce. Whatever the prediction covers gets subtracted before it ever reaches you. That is why an identical touch is rated less intense and less tickly when you are the one producing it. Route the same movement through a robot and add a delay of 100 to 200 ms, and the tickle comes straight back.

Here is the part that is not trivia. In a 2003 Science study, six pairs of people took turns pressing each other's finger and were told to match the force exactly. In that experiment the force climbed by a mean of about 38 % on every turn, and nobody was cheating — each side honestly felt the other one hit harder, because your own force always lands quieter.

Two things this video deliberately does not claim. It does not claim nobody can tickle themselves — a delay restores it in anyone. And it does not claim science has explained tickling: the laughter kind (gargalesis) is still open. This is about light touch and sensory attenuation, which is the part that is actually settled.
